FOUNDATIONS OF SPORTS PERFORMANCE
Power = Velocity
FxD÷T – (Force x Distance ÷ Time)
Time is the most important component and the distinguishing factor from all other foundations listed
How FAST can you apply your strength
Acceleration
Acceleration is not top end speed – it’s how fast you can get to top end speed
Most sport movement is about acceleration into deceleration back into acceleration
Speed
Top end speed (max mph and distance at which it can be held)
Acceleration is the key, BUT if you accelerate into being slow it does you no good
Strength
FxD – (Force x Distance) – no time component necessary for success
Strength is the foundation for all other attributes are built on
Flexibility – (2-part component)
1. Essential for proper Technique and Range of Motion
Stiff lower body (hips, knees, and ankles) and stiff upper body (T-spine, shoulder girdle, elbow and wrist) will hinder technique and movement efficiency
Stiff spinal movement will hinder the ability to bend and twist and will affect technique and movement efficiency
2. Essential for Injury Management, “Prevention” and Range of Motion
Lessens possibility for soft tissue, joint ligament and tendon injuries through proper joint function through full range of motion
Low back, lower extremities, and shoulders are most prone to injury with inefficient flexibility
